Cardinal ‘very saddened’ that Harvard will allow black mass

Cardinal Sean O’Malley this morning said he was deeply “saddened” that Harvard University is allowing a black mass that is a sacrilegious parody of Roman Catholic liturgy to go forward tonight.

“I was disappointed. I was hoping Harvard would see how offensive and evil this was, and please ask them not to do it on their property,” the cardinal told reporters today at an event honoring former Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

“I don’t think there is anything we can do to prevent this. There is free speech. But what is disappointing is when there are institutions that are so important and allow this to take place in their venue,” he said.

Last week, Satanic Temple — a New York-based group known for its publicity stunts to draw attention to First Amendment rights — announced its plans to hold the mass on campus, hosted by the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club. The mass will follow a talk by Harvard Kennedy School of Government lecturer Christopher Robichaud…
