Chuck Todd Clings to Myth That Bill Clinton was Impeached Because of Affair

Appearing on The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd on Friday was former GOP congressman from Georgia Bob Barr, who is looking to return to the House in 2014. Instead on focusing on what Barr can offer his district, Todd asked about Barr’s stint as the Libertarian candidate for president in 2008, and his role in writing the articles of impeachment of Bill Clinton during his former stint in Congress. Todd made the claim that Clinton’s impeachment was based his sexual affairs.

In a recent radio interview, Barr was asked if elected would he try to impeach President Obama the way he impeached Clinton. Barr answered that he still had the old files. Todd made that the focus of his discussion.

Todd:

But let me ask you this. Do you feel you’re partly responsible for this atmosphere of polarization that we have today? Impeachment was incredibly divisive. Then we had the 2000 election, which was divisive, the Iraq war — but you could argue that the impeachment, going after the president at the time for his sexual peccadilloes divided this country to a point that we’ve not recovered since. Why joke about impeachment, as you did on that radio show? Is that the type of divisive politics you think we need in Washington?

Barr:

Chuck, I don’t know what you’re talking about. That wasn’t a joke. I was asked a question about impeachment, and I answered it very seriously. To claim — to claim that President Clinton was impeached for peccadilloes is nonsense. He was impeached for perjury. That may not be important to you, but for a majority in the House, it was important…
