Update (DP): Fox News now says three staffers — two reporters and a producer — were targeted by Obama’s Justice Department.

Weasel Zippers: “You know it’s bad when the left is defending Fox News.”

Related: At the Big Journalism link above:

…The thing you have to keep in mind here is that if Kim and Rosen did what the Obama administration says they did — it is something that happens almost every day between reporters and their sources. It is called everyday journalism; and the Obama administration is attempting to criminalize everyday journalism.

If sources are not leaking information to journalists, what is the alternative? Well, the only alternative is that the media write what the government tells them to write.

Here is Rosen’s article in question.

Obama DOJ formally accuses journalist in leak case of committing crimes. Yet another serious escalation of the Obama administration’s attacks on press freedoms emerges

It is now well known that the Obama justice department has prosecuted more government leakers under the 1917 Espionage Act than all prior administrations combined – in fact, double the number of all such prior prosecutions. But as last week’s controversy over the DOJ’s pursuit of the phone records of AP reporters illustrated, this obsessive fixation in defense of secrecy also targets, and severely damages, journalists specifically and the newsgathering process in general.

New revelations emerged yesterday in the Washington Post that are perhaps the most extreme yet when it comes to the DOJ’s attacks on press freedoms. It involves the prosecution of State Department adviser Stephen Kim, a naturalized citizen from South Korea who was indicted in 2009 for allegedly telling Fox News’ chief Washington correspondent, James Rosen, that US intelligence believed North Korea would respond to additional UN sanctions with more nuclear tests – something Rosen then reported. Kim did not obtain unauthorized access to classified information, nor steal documents, nor sell secrets, nor pass them to an enemy of the US. Instead, the DOJ alleges that he merely communicated this innocuous information to a journalist – something done every day in Washington – and, for that, this arms expert and long-time government employee faces more than a decade in prison for “espionage”…

…It is virtually impossible at this point to overstate the threat posed by the Obama DOJ to press freedoms…

Written by the very liberal Brit Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian. Read the whole thing.

More Targeting? CBS Reporter Sharyl Attkisson: “There’s Definitely been an Intrusion into my Computer System” – Audio

No Bush warrant for e-mail correspondence of NYTimes reporters

But don’t worry, this guy’s covered:

While Rosen Is Pursued, Gregory’s Gun Violation Gets a Pass

If there is one lesson I have learned over my decade and a half at Judicial Watch, it is this: you must never overestimate the hypocrisy of the Left–especially in covering for their own…

Update: ‘First they came for Fox News…’

…In her column, [Kirsten] Powers notes how most of the media shrugged when the Obama administration attacked Fox News in the past. But their silence then means they are at the mercy of the administration now…

“When cyclones tear up Oklahoma and hurricanes swamp Alabama and wildfires scorch Texas, you come to us, the rest of the country, for billions of dollars to recover. And the damage that your polluters and deniers are doing doesn’t just hit Oklahoma and Alabama and Texas.”

It’s an open question of whether Obama has anything in common even with the Black middle class. But the idea that he has anything in common with the underclass is a cynical joke…

…Obama’s pretense that he had a common experience with the kid on the streets is willfully dishonest. He didn’t.

“The brothers who have been left behind – who haven’t had the same opportunities we have – they need to hear from us. We’ve got to be in the barbershops with them, at church with them, spending time and energy and presence helping pull them up, exposing them to new opportunities, and supporting their dreams,” Obama said.

A quick look at the unemployment rate for Brothers will show how well Obama has done that. What has Obama actually done about that? Every now and then he gives a speech in which he pretends that his time goofing around doing drugs gives him some understanding of the “brothers”.

“Whatever success I achieved, whatever positions of leadership I’ve held, have depended less on Ivy League degrees or SAT scores or GPAs, and have instead been due to that sense of empathy and connection – the special obligation I felt, as a black man like you, to help those who needed it most; people who didn’t have the opportunities that I had, because but for the grace of God, I might be in their shoes,” Obama said.

It’s highly unlike that Obama, the son of privilege on his mother’s side, and of a foreign diplomat on his father’s side, whose stepfather was a colonel in Indonesia, would ever be in their shoes…
