After Nidal Hasan killed 13 and wounded more than 30 in November 2009, John R. Lott wrote about one of the craziest policies to come out of the Clinton era: making military bases “gun free zones.”
Yes, that’s correct. In 1993, President Bill Clinton decreed that US military personnel were to surrender the Second Amendment rights that they swear an oath to support and defend. Lott, writing in 2009, called for that policy to be ended.
Shouldn’t an army base be the last place where a terrorist should be able to shoot at people uninterrupted for 10 minutes? After all, an army base is filled with soldiers who carry guns, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case. Beginning in March 1993, under the Clinton administration, the army forbids military personnel from carrying their own personal firearms and mandates that “a credible and specific threat against [Department of the Army] personnel [exist] in that region” before military personnel “may be authorized to carry firearms for personal protection.” Indeed, most military bases have relatively few military police as they are in heavy demand to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The unarmed soldiers could do little more than cower as Major Nidal Malik Hasan stood on a desk and shot down into the cubicles in which his victims were trapped…
…Gun free zones do have a tangible connection to these mass shootings. Killers are surely aware that once they transport a firearm onto a stateside US military base, they’re facing unarmed patriots who have been deprived of the means to defend themselves.

Related: Fort Hood issues new policy after soldiers protest for open carry rights
After several confrontations between soldiers and civilian police, Fort Hood has created a new policy.
In an email outlining the policy, Fort Hood says, “There is a growing trend of soldiers assigned to Fort Hood openly carrying firearms in private business establishments.”
When approached by police, they say soldiers have been refusing to cooperate with civilian police officers who try to assess if the guns are a threat to the public.
The local owner of B&K Pawn believes some of this confrontation may come from confusing gun laws.
“It seems like a double edge sword the military people under 21 can carry a handgun in pursuit of their duties on Fort Hood,” explains Scott McComas. “But once they step off of Fort Hood they aren’t really able to carry a firearm because they are not of age.”…
No details yet from the LA Times on what the “misconduct’ was, but per their Navy source, it was enough to get him discharged. Hmmmm.
An all-around bad guy or a guy with a strange, violent dark streak to him?…
…When will enough be enough?
Congress must stop shirking its responsibility and resume a thoughtful debate on gun violence in this country. We must do more to stop this endless loss of life…
CAJ note: I know. We’re just as shocked as you are! Someone should break it to her that a “deranged person or grievance killer” isn’t going to apply for their concealed carry permit.
…The president then went into a lengthy and familiar defense of his economic record as events surrounding the Navy Yard murders continued to unfold. Obama criticized Republicans in advance of the upcoming budget battle, mocked Mitt Romney as having lost after calling for a repeal of ObamaCare, and talked about the economy he inherited from George W. Bush…

Krauthammer Slams Obama for Speech Attacking Republicans Delivered Just Minutes after Washington Navy Yard Shooting A video at Freedom’s Lighthouse
Charles Krauthammer could not be more right.
He hammers Barack Obama for his partisan, deceitful attack on Republicans just minutes after thirteen people were killed within a short distance of the White House. Obama made the attacks on Republicans rather than cancel his economic speech, even though he was fully aware of the crisis unfolding nearby…
