On Thursday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) blasted current military policy prohibiting military members from carrying weapons on base, and suggesting that it was time to change that policy. “Given yesterday’s tragedy at Fort Hood, it is abundantly clear something needs to be done to protect our men and women in the United States military,” Gohmert told TruthRevolt exclusively. “Just as we have seen repeatedly in mass shootings in civilian or military areas, shooters normally go to areas where concealed weapons are not allowed.”
Gohmert continued:
It should be remembered that even before the Hassan murders at Ft. Hood, a gunman murdered innocent people at a cafeteria in Killeen, spurring a woman whose parents were killed there to get elected to the Texas legislature and push through Texas’ concealed carry law.
Soldiers should have a concealed carry permit process as well as the ability to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon on a military installation. It seems ridiculous to forbid people from getting a concealed carry permit who are qualified to use weapons on that installation.
Concealed carry acts as a deterrent to those who always choose gun free zones as the target of their heinous acts. We owe it to our heroic soldiers to ensure their safety on base. We must create this permit process to do just that. At the same time, we must also do more to assist those who have served our country in hostile theaters on our behalf who develop post traumatic stress disorder. They need quick evaluations and quality treatment and care rather than neglect until they harm themselves or others. They deserve better.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) has similarly called for soldiers to be armed on base. So has former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
