Israel-Jordan reach historic gas deal

‘Israel is turning into energy power that will supply its neighbors’ needs’, minister says of $15 billion deal

Israel and Jordan are signing an agreement Wednesday for a massive supply of Israeli gas to the Hashemite Kingdom. The deal will reportedly make Israel Jordan’s biggest energy supplier for years to come.

“This is a historic move that will strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Israel and Jordan,” said Energy Minister Silvan Shalom ahead of the signing. “Israel is turning into an energy power which will supply its neighbors’ energy needs and strengthen its standing in the region.”

Under the agreement, Israel will supply Jordan with $15 billion worth of gas from its Leviathan field over the next 15 years.

The deal is being signed in the presence of industry representatives and of US diplomats, who have been chaperoning the negotiations in advance of the deal…
