PROVIDENCE, RI — Public Safety Commissioner Steven M. Pare visited the Occupy Providence encampment at Burnside Park on Wednesday, where he said he was concerned for protesters’ safety.

“We’ve had Level 3 sex-offenders here,” Pare said. The park “is open, you have people coming in and out, and you have people here sleeping … When you have that mix, you people should be concerned.” He said he’d seen children there at night.

Pare said patrol officers had recognized the sex offenders.

Pare repeated that Occupy Providence will be asked to move, but “with written notice” first.

Mayor Angel Taveras said Monday that the city will seek a preliminary injunction within days.
