Sen. Markey Votes 'Present' On Free Speech

This is the kind of thing a politician announces on a Good Friday weekend, hoping it will pass unnoticed by the media:

Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, introduced legislation to examine the prevalence of hate crime and hate speech on the Internet, television, and radio to better address such crimes. The Hate Crime Reporting Act of 2014 (S.2219) would create an updated comprehensive report examining the role of the Internet and other telecommunications in encouraging hate crimes based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation and create recommendations to address such crimes.

 

Ed Markey’s  “Hate Crime Reporting Act” has nothing to do with “crimes.” It’s a government report on the content of TV, radio, websites, etc. That’s right: content. As in your words and opinions…

…Glenn happened to have a German radio from the Nazi era on his desk this morning, and he explained the great lengths taken by the Nazi government to ensure the German people only heard what they wanted them to hear.

“This [radio has] the German swastika on it, the German eagle is on it. This was an S.S. approved radio. It would only pick up the right radio stations, so you couldn’t tune into to the BBC or anything else. They just took those frequencies away,” Glenn explained…
