My good friend Dinesh, a Nepali filmmaker, made this sad documentary. In a nutshell, the people of the kamaiya system are born slaves. Their fathers or father’s fathers took on debt. They could not repay the debt due to an impossible system, and so the children’s children’s children are born to repay the debt. Dinesh told me that when he was with these people, they felt lost when they were set free. When they were set free, they didn’t know what to do.
There are a thousand such stories here in Asia. We could go on for hours.
