A new book by photographer Lindsay McCrum titled “Chicks with Guns” explores and celebrates women’s gun ownership across the United States. And we got the pictures to prove it.

Around 20 million women own guns in the United States. Despite that substantial group, women are not regularly depicted in popular culture as defenders and practitioners of firearms tradition. McCrum decided to change that…

…McCrum said she was “so surprised by the variety and breadth and diversity of these women. There are so many stereotypes about guns… but the reality is so much more complex and varied than you can imagine.”

The author has tried to capture that complexity in 80 portrait photos and individual stories on the role of guns for the women and their families. McCrum learned that women own guns for many reasons, but underlying those personal decisions lies unifying themes of individualism, self-reliance, and the family…
