National Journal’s Reid Wilson reports on the mixed results of a poll on the potential GOP platform for 2010:
[H]alf of respondents — 52% — opposed replacing Medicare with a system that provides vouchers for senior citizens so they can purchase their own private insurance, a cornerstone policy in Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) “Roadmap” proposal. A third supported that policy…
Democrats won’t welcome all the results in the poll, however. Republican proposals to allow Americans to invest some of their Social Security tax dollars as they choose won 58% support, while just 28% opposed any privatization.
The Social Security issue is a very big deal, because that’s the attack of choice for many endangered Democratic candidates against conservatives this year. We’ll see how well that works in November.
Personal choice and freedom to save for retirement will eventually become a winning issue — especially with the young professional college graduates whom Democrats have been cultivating. Doubly so if a huge payroll tax hike is proposed to save the current, outdated system.
