Dodd, Conrad cleared in Countrywide probe

[Ed. Does this decision by the Senate Ethics Committee have the appearance of two foxes watching the henhouse, and one fox telling the other, “Just don’t get caught again…”?]

The Senate Ethics Committee on Friday dismissed complaints against Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Kent Conrad (D-ND) over their participation in Countrywide Financial Corp.’s VIP lending program.

But the panel cautioned the senators that they should have “exercised more vigilance” in their dealings with the mortgage giant to avoid an appearance of preferential treatment.

Dodd is holding a 2 p.m. news conference to discuss the dismissal of the complaint against him.
