The State Column
3/14/2011
Florida U.S. Rep. Allen West announced the formation of a federal “leadership PAC,” a sign that the Florida Republican may have plans for expanding his brand outside of Florida.
West, who raised more than $6.4 million for his own campaign last year, plans to use his Guardian Leadership PAC to support other conservative candidates, Mr. West’s spokesman said.
Asked if the Florida has any larger ambitions, West Chief of Staff Jonathan Blyth said, “his focus is on representing the people of the 22nd District.”
Mr. West has built a national following since his election in 2010. The Florida Republican was heavily backed by the state’s Tea Party movement, a move that vaulted him into the national spotlight.
The move is likely in anticipation of the 2012 presidential campaign. A number of potential Republican presidential candidates have traveled to the state of Florida in recent weeks, including former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
