The 19 students in Jim Barthelman’s fifth grade class at Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat, in the Alaska village of Quinhagak, weren’t expecting more than 200 to view the video they posted on YouTube on December 10, 2010.
At the time of this posting their heartwarming and inventive take on a Hallelujah Chorus had been viewed by 1,198,430 people. When the Common American Journal posted the video on December 24, 2010, it had been viewed by around 182,000. The class spent 10 hours over a weekend shooting the video and involved a number of people from the nearby Yup’ik community of about 700.
