SINGAPORE Feb 9 (Reuters) – A U.S.-bound oil supertanker was hijacked off the coast of Oman, shipbrokers said on Wednesday.

The vessel, the Irene SL, can hold as much as 2 million barrels oil and was bound for the Gulf coast.

International navies have struggled to contain piracy in the Indian Ocean owing to the vast distances involved as Somali seaborne gangs make millions in ransoms.
