‘We deserve better’

Tonight, Mitt Romney needed to give the speech of his life. And he did.

That isn’t to say that Romney suddenly morphed into Ronald Reagan. He wasn’t electrifying. But he brought what is best about Mitt Romney to the surface: seriousness, leadership ability, and most of all, a true understanding of how business works, and how jobs are created.

The speech was optimistic throughout – but Romney’s assault on Barack Obama’s record was devastating. The key line of the night came midway through the speech when he dropped a rhetorical nuclear bomb on Obama’s failed hope-and-change aspirations: “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. MY promise…is to help you and your family.”

And that, in a nutshell, is what this election is about: a president who has dreams but no competence versus a president who believes in the competence of the American people and wishes to free them from the dreamy nonsense of federal overreach. Romney is all substance. Obama is all style. And America doesn’t need a stylish president when our economy faces a double-dip recession caused, at least in part, by a celebrity commander-in-chief.

Mitt Romney is a CEO. Barack Obama is a professor. And it’s time to get down to business.

Anyone who can’t tell the difference between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney need only have watched Romney’s keynote to learn that difference. It’s not a minor difference of opinion. It’s a chasm of philosophy: who should we trust? The government? Or the people of the United States?
