Gen. David Petraeus — the key figure behind the Iraq surge and a now a key player in Afghanistan as head of the U.S. Central Commander — has been undergoing two months of radiation treatment for early stage prostate cancer, news outlets are reporting.
That may explain his somewhat low-key role in the ongoing debate over whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, or pull some out.
It could also have some political implications. Petraeus has been touted as a potential Republican candidate for president in 2012, though aides have denied such political ambitions.
