Senators compromise on health bill

After months of private negotiations and cryptic public statements, senators are beginning to show their hands on health care reform.

First, the bill proposed last week by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) revealed a series of concessions and compromises aimed at winning bipartisan support. Then, senators responded by filing 564 amendments to change it.

On Tuesday, the Finance Committee begins the final phase of its work — the markup — before voting to send the bill to the full Senate.

Here’s a look at areas where liberals were placated and conservatives took heart — and at how senators from both parties want more out of the bill.
