New Year’s Eve: Fireworks, music and Big Ben welcome 2012 in London
Thousands of revellers saw in the New Year against a backdrop of spectacular fireworks by the Thames in central London.

Viewing areas filled up two to three hours before the midnight event as about 250,000 party-goers secured the best vantage points.
Big Ben famous chimes were followed by the launch from the London Eye of the UK’s biggest annual fireworks display, set to a tailor-made soundtrack.
Some 12,000 fireworks were exploded during the spectacular 11-minute and 15-second display. Under the London Eye, lit up for the occasion, the crowds danced to music being played by Radio 1 DJ Nihal…
