…Secretary of State John Kerry was backed into a corner during a congressional hearing on Tuesday by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), who blasted the president for shaking the “bloody hand” of someone like Castro.

“Mr. Secretary, sometimes a handshake is just a handshake, but when the leader of the free world shakes the bloody hand of a ruthless dictator like Raul Castro, it becomes a propaganda coup for the tyrant. Castro uses that hand to sign the orders to repress and jail democracy advocates,” the congresswoman lectured.

Ros-Lehtinen went on to ask Kerry to “tell the Cuban people living under that repressive regime that, a handshake notwithstanding, the U.S. policy toward the cruel and sadistic Cuban dictatorship has not weakened.”

Dodging the question, Kerry argued that “today is about honoring Nelson Mandela” and pointed out that Obama called on world leaders to honor the late South African leader’s by upholding “basic human rights.”…

…On foreign policy, Ayers said Obama is acting like an “imperial leader.”

“You’re attributing to Obama not only good intentions but good actions around Afghanistan and Iraq. Actually he’s not acting well. He’s acting like any imperial leader would act,” Ayers told his interviewer in a new Chicago Magazine story, published online Tuesday. “He wants to have an agreement with [Afghan President Hamid] Karzai because he wants to keep American troops there, trainers there, to keep our interest in oil and all the rest of it on the front burner.”

Ayers said Obama’s actions were consistent with American history…

Update:   Why is Ted Cruz the only U.S. senator attending Mandela memorial?

…From the United States Congress, House Speaker John Boehner appointed a 23-member delegation, led by Illinois Republican Rep. Aaron Schock and dominated by members of the Congressional Black Caucus, all Democrats. Their plane departed early Monday morning.

But what about the U.S. Senate? Senators could have joined the representatives on the congressional plane. But exactly one — one — senator will be at the Mandela memorial: Texas Republican Ted Cruz. No member of the majority Democratic or minority Republican leadership will attend. And not the Senate’s only black Democrat, Cory Booker, or the Senate’s only black Republican, Tim Scott.

Why such a poor turnout from the world’s greatest deliberative body? “Remember, the presidential delegation didn’t invite any members of Congress,” says a Senate Republican aide….

Here’s why Americans should find this image so disturbing:

During my time with the Secret Service, dramatic measures were always taken by the White House staff to avoid even accidentally coming into contact with foreign dictators and despots. The staff clearly understood that given the opportunity for a foreign dictator to approach the US President and extend a handshake that the President would be nearly obliged to take it.

This may not seem like a big problem but in the sensitive game of geo-politics a picture of a despot shaking the hand of the US President gives that despot immediate legitimacy, and can be used for propaganda purposes within that despot’s country.

The fact that the President did not only avoid shaking the hand of Raul Castro, a tyrant and a dictator who is currently holding US contractor Alan Gross in a filthy prison against both his and our wills, is shameful. The Castro brothers have tortured and imprisoned legions of Cuban citizens fighting a valiant fight for liberty and the President responds by extending a hand of friendship?

This is either an act of extreme political ignorance or a willful admission of acceptance of the ideology of tyranny propagated by a tyrant who cares nothing about his people and everything about his power.

Enough of this amateur hour “leadership”, the time for change is now.
