WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated John Bryson, the former chairman of a California power company and a prominent environmental advocate, to be his next commerce secretary.

Mr. Bryson retired in 2008 from Edison International, a publicly traded power company and the parent of Southern California Edison and Edison Mission Group, after 18 years there. He now serves as one of 20 senior advisers to the private-equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.

Mr. Obama said Mr. Bryson’s experience in the public and private sectors will serve him well as commerce secretary, where he will be charged with helping to expand U.S. exports.

In addition to helping run a power company, Mr. Bryson has served on the boards of companies such as Walt-Disney Co. and Boeing Co. “That’s the expertise that will help us create new jobs and make America more competitive in the global economy,” Mr. Obama said. He also hailed Mr. Bryson’s support of renewable energy.

Mr. Bryson co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental-advocacy group, and has been a member of the U.N. Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change. More recently, he served on then-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Climate Adaptation Advisory Panel.

Obama’s nominee, John Bryson, is a radical green activist who thought the democrat’s cap and trade bill was “moderate.”…
