Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) invited Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi – who was held for months in a Mexican prison – to the 2015 State of the Union Address as his guest.

Hunter joined Martha MacCallum on “On The Record” tonight to explain why he offered an invitation to Tahmooressi.

“I think it was important for him to actually see in-person the president of the United States, who is the one person in the whole country that could have gotten him out of jail,” Duncan said. “The one person in the whole country that could have gotten him out of jail and did not do anything to help him.”

“I think it was kind of important for him, therapeutic even, in my point of view, for him to go and see [Obama], but also see all the other members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans that were on his side and tried to help him out.”

Hunter also shared his thoughts on the release of admitted Al Qaeda operative Ali Saleh Kahlah al Marri from federal prison prior to completing his 15-year sentence because of “time served.”

“What we’re trying to find out is why. Why would you do this while you still have Marines and soldiers still on the ground in harm’s way? Why would you release somebody like this? It’s just kind of crazy. I don’t understand it, frankly.”
