Woodbury, MN: East Ridge High School’s Black Panther presentation irks parents

A Woodbury high school presentation about the Black Panther Party is sparking a backlash from parents.

East Ridge High School officials said it was part of an effort to teach kids about Black History month, but several parents said the Black Panthers were a Marxist organization that shouldn’t be honored.

“The objection is not that the Panthers were black but that they were violent,” said Andrea Mayer-Bruestle of Woodbury. “If you commemorated al-Qaida, the Ku Klux Klan or a Hitler youth group, how many parents would be freaking out?”

She said Thursday, Feb. 21, that a group of protesting parents is planning to make a presentation to the South Washington County school.

During Black History Month, public schools routinely honor civil rights leaders and other prominent black people in American history. At East Ridge High School, students have been hearing daily presentations broadcast over the school’s public address system.

A commemoration of the Black Panthers, the militant black-power group of the 1960s, was read to the school by a teacher Feb. 14….
