Whether he meant to or not, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has secured the political high ground and left Democrats and their union supporters shaking their heads in disbelief. I was a little worried about the governor’s fortitude when he offered a collective bargaining compromise earlier this week, but after tonight’s developments, I’m not convinced Walker knew Democrats would likely turn him down.
All throughout this debate, unions and Wisconsin Democrats decried Walker’s budget bill for including collective bargaining provisions, claiming they had nothing to do with solving the state’s fiscal crisis. Now that the GOP has extracted the provisions out of the budget bill and passed them in a non-fiscal measure, Dems have literally no recourse for claiming his actions were a moral violation — they have made his case for him.
Senate Democrats were offered a compromise on collective bargaining and they turned it down. Now the anti-union provision is on its way to the State Assembly and onto the Governor’s office for his seal of approval… and Democrats have no one to blame but themselves.

CAJ note: Death threats have been made against the legislators and their families, according to Wisconsin media [Update: Jim Hoft of GatewayPundit says the Justice Department is now investigating. Yuh…Good luck with that…]. Pray for these people who didn’t run away from their responsibilities and are now being harassed and terrified for staying to do their jobs.

UPDATE: Protesters are locking the Capitol doors shut from the inside using metal handcuffs, Meade reports from the scene. Plus this: “Meade called back to say, some of the doors are handcuffed shut and some are wide open. ‘ANYBODY CAN GET IN AND ANYBODY CAN BRING ANYTHING IN. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SECURITY WHATEVER.’”
And, from the comments: “They intend to physically keep the legislature from assembling tomorrow to vote. Mob rule… ”
Also: “I guess that this means the new civility bullshit is officially over?”
And, noting the DNC’s involvement in these protests: “Barack Obama paid for, organized, and is putting on this riot.”
MORE: Michael Moore: “This Is War.” Yeah, I guess the “new civility bullshit” is officially over. Bear that in mind as you contemplate a response. I don’t think these people realize that they are setting precedents that they may come to regret. They are as feckless in this behavior as they are in their fiscal approach. The consequences are likely to be insalubrious.
